Mendez vs. Westminster Events at Chapman Univ. , Mon., Sept. 13

Week one of Film Fiesta was a glamorous trip back in time. Vintage cars, silent film stars and views of the Mexican Independence struggle from a variety of cultures set the stage for our Friday charla with Sylvia Morales, director of “A Crushing Love.” Continue the cinematic celebration tonight as we screen Sandra Robbie’s documentary “Mendez vs. Westminster” with a series of special events at Chapman University starting at 5pm.

Other Film Fiesta highlights this week include Golden Age classics at Calacas on Fourth, Independence Day lineups at Santa Ana College and Original Mike’s; two visual feasts from Disney; a portrait of artist Eloy Torres and classic feature films starring Santa Ana alumni Marlon Brando and Steve Martin. Film Fiesta is also pleased to announce our closing film, “The Storm that Swept Mexico,” in its OC premiere at Santa Ana’s “Fiestas Patrias” celebration!

Dia del Niño / Children’s Day, is a tradition celebrated in Mexico and in many parts of the world-a day when communities honor their children.

We, at El Centro Cultural de Mexico, would like to extend this special day to all children, families, cultural groups, community resources and businesses in and around Santa Ana, in an effort to bring together communities of diverse cultures, promoting global understanding and celebrating our multicultural nation through play, the arts, and literacy.

We plan to have a health fair, cultural music & dance, arts & crafts, games, toy raffles, and non-profit resources for children. We would like to take this opportunity to bring families of all cultural backgrounds together in honoring all of the children in our communities. We are seeking volunteers, cultural entertainment, talented children performers, non-profits that work with children, donations of toys, books, and raffle prizes, and in-kind and monetary contributions from local area businesses.

If your business is interested in donating to this project we would greatly appreciate your support. All donations would be recognized in the events program and any gifts contributed can be used as tax deductions.

All donations will be used for the Dia del Niño / Children’s Day event and for the benefit of the community and all members of the comite for Dia del Niño / Children’s Day are non-paid volunteers. Our vision is to provide a day of music, dancing, workshops, and activities, bringing the community together and joy to many children.

Help us to bring more awareness and aid to those in need. Search for local organizations that are reliable and trustworthy to donate. Do not donate food, clothing or anything else since is hard to ship all these items. The best way to support is with your monetary donations. The natural disaster relief arm of the Organization of American States, PADF ensures donations made through the site are safe and secure. Also the Red Cross, Churches and Consulates.

Several charities set up text-messaging systems to allow people to give micro donations, in which $5 or $10 goes directly to the charity, if people type in certain key words. Ask your local church or newspaper how can you help. I have compiled some links to different organizations that can be contacted directly. Please DO NOT contact us since we can help but to spread the word and keeeping people informed. Thank you and God Bless you!
