West Side Story
Much-loved American classic features interdisciplinary cast
Review by Josue Meneses
West Side Story, the groundbreaking musical that combines on stage performances, live music and drama was one of the best performances I ever seen, at least for the past decade at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. A great experience indeed, including lavishing production numbers, great portable sets, dazzling costumes, excellent choreographies and superb performances. A must see for the on-going theatre lover of just the occasional aficionado. Read more

BACKGROUND: Fifteen undergraduate choreographers present 13 original works – ranging from tap and ballet to modern/contemporary – in this annual showcase of talent. Assistant Professor Loretta Livingston serves as artistic director for this 90-minute program.
The UCI Department of Dance was founded on the principle that aspiring professionals need substantial experience in more than one form of dance and in more than one academic area to succeed in the field of dance. Dance at UCI reflects the research and preservation of dance history, the exploration of choreography in the present, and the cutting edge technology of the future. Student choreography, teaching, and scholarship benefit from exposure to many styles and approaches, all aiming to inspire and prepare the next generation of dance professionals.

SON JAROCHO CONCERT
October 31, 2007 by admin
Filed under Entertainment, Events, Special Events, performing arts
Los Cojolites are a collective of soneros who currently work and live together in Jaltipan, Veracruz, Mexico. They started in 1997 as a workshop studying their regional dance, a poetry and music known as Son Jarocho. Following the release of their first album “El Conejo” in 2001, they traveled throughout much of Spain, France and the United States playing at such places as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C, and appearing on the soundtrack of the film “Frida.” Although no longer children, they continue to inspire a younger generation of soneros. By keeping respect for tradition and by having the courage and creativity to innovate based on those traditions, Los Cojolites will continue to contribute quality music to the 400 year old genre known as Son Jarocho.
The name “Los Cojolites” comes from a bird, a kind of pheasant that was venerated as a god of the trees by the ancient Nahuatl speaking people who lived around this area. The Cojolite Bird is especially known for the length of is song, a full uninterrupted five minutes of it, at the crack of dawn.
Among the hills and fields, villages and small cities in the southern part of Mexico’s Veracruz state, the lively string band music known as the “Son Jarocho” is the characteristic musical and dance expression of the region’s people. It is a genre that fuses the three great cultures that blended so flavorfully into today’s Mexico” Spanish (which is itself a blend of Christian Europe and Muslim North Africa), Black African and the indigenous. Around these parts community spirit is forged in the heart of its fandangos, fiestas, which amalgamate a strong social metal with its own special kind of spirituality and life style.
Son del Centro
Son del Centro is a group of companeros and camaradas who are students, musicians, activists, dancers, friends and organizers from various parts of Santa Ana, California.
The group was formed to create a space for youth to explore their traditions, creativity and consciousness, through son jarocho music. Inspired by the Jarocho groups from Mexico brought to Southern California by El Centro, this group of youth began attending son jarocho classes about two years ago, and fell in love with the music.
Soon they began performing at different events throughout Orange County.
Come enjoy a night of son jarocho music from the Veracruz region of Mexico!

Halloween Bash with ETEREUM

Filed under , Art, Entertainment, Music, Performance, Special Events, performing arts
ETEREUM is the brainchild project of Choreographer & Flamenco Dancer Claudia de la Cruz and Mixed Media Artist & Graphic Designer Josue Meneses aka XOSU3. CORROSION Art Show was their first formal live appearance together with this experimental music project introducing an extreme fusion of flamenco performance and junk percussions.
INKSURGENT a multimedia event that includes an array of different themes, poetry reading, installations and ground-breaking performances such as “Beautifully Rebellious” and “Circusmtance” it’s an ongoing project that back in 2003 started this odyssey of unknown fate that in one way or another had shaped ETEREUM as is today: a continuous metamorphosis act.
Claudia de la Cruz established her own FLAMENCO INSTITUTE at the heart of the Artist Village in the City of Santa Ana, California where she teaches since 2000. Around the same year Josue Meneses, (Graphic Designer) along with his brother, Israel Meneses (Web Master), started APARATVS web medics + graphic surgeons and CIRUJANOS GRAFICOS, their own Graphic Design and Web Development Lab in Orange California and have created dozens of sites for artists, businesses and so forth.
XOSU3 graduated as professional graphic designer in 1995 from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Mexico City with a Visual Arts Master Degree in 2002 from Coastline Community College is also founder, publisher, editor, writer and designer of ESPACIOALTERNATIVO an underground bilingual magazine since 1997.
