After Hours Phase 2:
Individual Stories

You are cordially invited to the Opening Reception (during the First Saturdays Art Walk) July 3rd, 4 – 10PM

The exhibit runs from July 1 to July 31, 2010 at OCCCA.
Orange County Center for Contemporary Art
117 North Sycamore
Santa Ana, CA USA, 92701
www.occca.org

AFTER HOURS
After Hours Project by Dalibor Polivka, Rob Mintz, and Viktor Hulik

PHASE 2: Individual Stories

Artists Included:
Jan Berger, Vladimir Popovic, Marian Mesko, Marian Mudroch, Igor Minarik, Milota Havrankova, Vojtech Kolencik, Marek Ormandik, Maria Balazova, Blazej Balaz, Svatozar Ilavsky, Marko Blaao, Asot Haas, Jan Hoffstädter, Martin Lettrich, Ingrid Visnovska, Oleg Fintora, Viktor Hulik

Curated by Xenia Lettrichova and Viktor Hulik

Individual Stories is the second part of a three-phase international art exhibition organized by Dalibor Polivka, Viktor Hulik and Rob Mintz showing eighteen avant-garde Slovakian artists at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in July 2010.

For this exhibit OCCCA is proud to host Galeria Z from Bratislava, Slovakia. In September 2010 OCCCA will send a group show to Slovakia called After Hours.

Contemporary art exists in a kaleidoscopic space of exchange, a　shared world with many time zones. To build the first truly global culture artists must work together to promote, assist and inspire each other.

This project was made possible with generous support from the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava, the Slovak Embassy in Los Angeles and the Slovak-American Center.

Individual Stories

To explore the current moment of the Slovak art scene, Individual Stories presents artists from different generations each with an individual creative identity. Maria Balazova uses symbols, Asot Haas changing illusions of light, Oleg Fintora transparency, and Viktor Hulík rational investigation of space and movement. Jan Berger employs multiple layers of expressive colors, Igor Minárik detailed mosaic compositions, Marian Mesko classic minimalism, Marian Mudroch extremes of light and dark, Ingrid Viscovsk additions of script, all exploring the possibilities of geometric abstraction, the color spectrum and the fundamentals of vision.

Vojto Kolencík translates literature into painterly gestures. Blazej Balaz’s post-conceptualism centers on text. Vlado Popovic is influenced by his experiences in photography, film and theatre. Marko Blazo comments on current events in multi-media installations. Sveto Ilavsky’s paintings break through art’s conventions to attain great thematic complexity. Jan Hoffstadter’s objects engage the viewer in a sophisticated three-dimensional dialogue. Martin Lettrich sensually redefines space. Milota Havránková uses photography to depict her inner world, an intimate private domain.

This rich variety of aesthetic theory and practice is anchored in the Slovak environment but resonates far beyond geographic borders. These artists are linked to us across obsolete frontiers by the internet, increased travel, international art fairs, and the desires of collectors. OCCCA is excited to introduce this roster of exotic names that roll off the tongue like poetry, wishing each of them the best of luck pursuing new exhibition opportunities in America.

Fashion is a seductive powerhouse in contemporary culture, worthy of celebration and critique. From the earliest days of civilization to the present moment, we’ve been obsessed by decorative creations to adorn and define our beings. Madly inspired garments, bravura sketches, elaborately finished works, and experimental art in all media including video and installation will be accepted for judging to showcase the edge where adornment meets art.

Deadline for entries: January 12, 2009 (received not postmarked)

A catalog of accepted works will accompany this exhibition.

Fees and Deadline
A non-refundable $35.00 entry fee must accompany all submissions and arrive at OCCCA by January 12, 2009.

Juror: Claudia Grau
Claudia Grau opened her first store on Melrose Ave in 1979, with one of a kind clothes created by her wacky imagination. Her first commercial fashion hit washer “Depression wear” which was a Mad Max meets the Stone Age. Celebrities like Cher, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton, were regulars at the boutique. Later, Claudia designed what became her signature collection antique Japanese kimonos constructed into a patchwork fabric, and remade into tailored jackets. Noted as one of the top woman of personal style in designer Randolph Duke’s book: “The Look: Dressing from the inside Out”, Claudia has an eye for the unusual and has a flair for crossing the lines between Art and Fashion.

CONTEMPORARY ART

Mission Hospital in Orange County and OCCCA to debut one-of-a-kind art exhibit of inspiring medical imagery captured in fascinating contemporary art

Exhibition Dates:

“This exciting exhibit combines two very different but very fascinating worlds of science and art,” said Joseph Gagliardo, executive director of imaging services and innovative technologies at Mission Hospital. “The images used in the artwork are captured by the very same imaging equipment that saves lives every day. Through this exhibit, our advanced diagnostic equipment now gives life to art, too.”

Images from Mission Hospital’s advanced technology – including 3- and 4-D ultrasound, mammography, interventional and digital radiology, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and conventional X-rays – serve as the basis of creation as OCCCA artists mold the images to their own artistic expression.

An all media national juried exhibition

714.667.1517 www.occca.org
Opening Reception September 6th, 6 PM to 10 PM

Juror:
Mat Gleason, editor and publisher of
Coagula Art Magazine

Recently praised by the British critic Julian Stallabrass in his book, Art Incorporated, The Story of Contemporary Art, Mat Gleason has a keen eye for quality and authenticity, ferocious wit and an intimate knowledge of the jungle.

Animals, real and imaginary. We fear them, pamper them, tame them, trap them, eat them, lobby on their behalf, experiment on them, strut them as status symbols, and exterminate them. How do contemporary artists represent them?

From the caves of Lascaux, to the halls of the Louvre, there is no escaping them. With their long pedigree in the history of art, they prowl the great museums of the world. And today, animals leap from the work of contemporary artists, symbolically expressing their ideas and emotions. OCCCA’s terrific exhibition space will showcase a menagerie of superb examples of this trend, from the traditional to the avant-garde, from the realistic to the fantastic, in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and new media

A catalog of accepted works will
accompany this exhibition.

The truth, what is our understanding about the truth in domestic violence?
“If I can reach the good part of every person and change the way they think, my work is done; but then I’ll insist until I see the change is complete.” Guevara

Many times we ask ourselves this question why we are not honest when it comes to domestic violence, what’s the reason for not doing it.

LOVE?
CO DEPENDANCY?
SHAME?
EMBARRASMENT?
IGNORANCE?

Doesn’t matter what’s the reality that drive people to lie about the truth in domestic violence. The only truth is that domestic violence can’t be tolerated in our society anymore; the need of help is and will be a priority until we eradicate this chronic social behavior from our own homes and families.

SAY NO TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Guevara

Mexican Artist
Luis Arturo Guevara Vazquez

Born in Mexico City 1950 the family moved to the State of Guanajuato at the small Village in Salvatierra. At the age of 8 Guevara suffered a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down, for over a year his parents carried him every day to the doctor for therapy and to get his two daily shots. They didn’t have enough money to buy a wheel chair for him, but they did have a lot of love for their son.

After spending all year long in bed the doctors told the family that he was never going to walk again. But Guevara was listening to his friends playing “Canicas” marbles outside his house but he was not wasting any time, he will get up and fall again and again until one day he was able to last more than a few seconds standing. And then the next day a little step and the next one step, that was without the doctor’s and parents knowledge they told Guevara not to try to get up under any circumstances in order not to hurt him self but some time the bruises will show and they knew I he was trying to get up.

Well he persisted until he was able to walk normally again, and in 1974 or 75 Guevara moved to California where he is pursuing his artistic career. Since then Guevara has donated many WHEEL chairs to poor children mainly to D.I.F. of Rosarito Beach Baja California Mexico .
