The OC Film Fiesta is a cinematic celebration of the Santa Ana’s Latino heritage through cinema and an educational tour of Santa Ana’s historic roots.

Launched in 2010 as part of The City of Santa Ana’s 2010 “Fiestas Patrias – Fiestas de Independencia” Mexican Bicentennial, this unity-building event provides downtown audiences, both new arrivals and traditional families, with entertaining events throughout the City of Santa Ana that deepen relationships with local cultural groups, businesses, colleges and the film industry.

OC Film Fiesta In Santa Ana Kicks Off Week 2:

Mendez vs. Westminster Events at Chapman Univ. , Mon., Sept. 13

Week one of Film Fiesta was a glamorous trip back in time. Vintage cars, silent film stars and views of the Mexican Independence struggle from a variety of cultures set the stage for our Friday charla with Sylvia Morales, director of “A Crushing Love.” Continue the cinematic celebration tonight as we screen Sandra Robbie’s documentary “Mendez vs. Westminster” with a series of special events at Chapman University starting at 5pm.

Other Film Fiesta highlights this week include Golden Age classics at Calacas on Fourth, Independence Day lineups at Santa Ana College and Original Mike’s; two visual feasts from Disney; a portrait of artist Eloy Torres and classic feature films starring Santa Ana alumni Marlon Brando and Steve Martin. Film Fiesta is also pleased to announce our closing film, “The Storm that Swept Mexico,” in its OC premiere at Santa Ana’s “Fiestas Patrias” celebration!

Be a part of the first OC Film Fiesta in Santa Ana, which takes place from September 4-19. All screenings are FREE and open to the public, and will take place at the Yost Theater, Fiesta Twin, Chapman University and other venues throughout downtown Santa Ana.

The OC Film Fiesta in Santa Ana is part of The City of Santa Ana’s 2010 Mexican Bicentennial events, and celebrates Santa Ana’s Latino heritage while also exploring Santa Ana’s historic roots through cinema. Join us for a series of activities, screening and panel discussion commemorating the landmark 1947 Mendez vs. Westminster Orange County school desegregation case. Co-Sponsored by Hispanic Bar Association and Chapman University

Join us at Orange Circle (Glassell and Chapman) before the film @ 6:20pm as we take a 20 minute civil rights “Peace of Orange” tour which includes the last standing Mexican school from OC’s segregation era. Be greeted by mariachis as you arrive on campus in time for the film! After the screening, stay for a fascinating panel discussion on matters of race, civil rights and education in Orange County hosted by the Hispanic Bar Association of OC, followed by a reception. Private Party/Film Screening: March 13, 2010

In the midst of scoring a silent gothic thriller film, my thoughts have been preoccupied with visions of candlelight foreshadowing death, lucky pendants, and families broken by social status and secrecy. I have dedicated the past month to gory visions, timing on-screen murders with appropriate percussive force, and asking myself to forget for moments that turn into hours how much I really do love my life.

I knew that life as a film composer must be intense, but I wasn’t sure quite how it would feel waking up at 3:45 a.m, compelled to write a counter-melody that tied well into the Dies Irae theme I had composed months ago while in a particular state of consternation. (The literal translation for Dies Irae is “Day of Wrath.”) Bone chilling, to say the least.

Now, I am pleased to celebrate the results of my midnight scoring sessions with a private party and film screening. I hope you can join me for this celebration! - Carter
