Individual Stories is the second part of a three-phase international art exhibition organized by Dalibor Polivka, Viktor Hulik and Rob Mintz showing eighteen avant-garde Slovakian artists at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in July 2010.

For this exhibit OCCCA is proud to host Galeria Z from Bratislava, Slovakia. In September 2010 OCCCA will send a group show to Slovakia called After Hours.

Contemporary art exists in a kaleidoscopic space of exchange, a　shared world with many time zones. To build the first truly global culture artists must work together to promote, assist and inspire each other.

This project was made possible with generous support from the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava, the Slovak Embassy in Los Angeles and the Slovak-American Center.

Individual Stories

To explore the current moment of the Slovak art scene, Individual Stories presents artists from different generations each with an individual creative identity. Maria Balazova uses symbols, Asot Haas changing illusions of light, Oleg Fintora transparency, and Viktor Hulík rational investigation of space and movement. Jan Berger employs multiple layers of expressive colors, Igor Minárik detailed mosaic compositions, Marian Mesko classic minimalism, Marian Mudroch extremes of light and dark, Ingrid Viscovsk additions of script, all exploring the possibilities of geometric abstraction, the color spectrum and the fundamentals of vision.

Vojto Kolencík translates literature into painterly gestures. Blazej Balaz’s post-conceptualism centers on text. Vlado Popovic is influenced by his experiences in photography, film and theatre. Marko Blazo comments on current events in multi-media installations. Sveto Ilavsky’s paintings break through art’s conventions to attain great thematic complexity. Jan Hoffstadter’s objects engage the viewer in a sophisticated three-dimensional dialogue. Martin Lettrich sensually redefines space. Milota Havránková uses photography to depict her inner world, an intimate private domain.

This rich variety of aesthetic theory and practice is anchored in the Slovak environment but resonates far beyond geographic borders. These artists are linked to us across obsolete frontiers by the internet, increased travel, international art fairs, and the desires of collectors. OCCCA is excited to introduce this roster of exotic names that roll off the tongue like poetry, wishing each of them the best of luck pursuing new exhibition opportunities in America.

The Thrill of Life – At Knife’s Edge

Private Party/Film Screening: March 13, 2010

In the midst of scoring a silent gothic thriller film, my thoughts have been preoccupied with visions of candlelight foreshadowing death, lucky pendants, and families broken by social status and secrecy. I have dedicated the past month to gory visions, timing on-screen murders with appropriate percussive force, and asking myself to forget for moments that turn into hours how much I really do love my life.

I knew that life as a film composer must be intense, but I wasn’t sure quite how it would feel waking up at 3:45 a.m, compelled to write a counter-melody that tied well into the Dies Irae theme I had composed months ago while in a particular state of consternation. (The literal translation for Dies Irae is “Day of Wrath.”) Bone chilling, to say the least.

Now, I am pleased to celebrate the results of my midnight scoring sessions with a private party and film screening. I hope you can join me for this celebration! - Carter

Kebe Fox poses and dissects these questions through his playful imagery, weaving symbols, animals, shapes and moods within three-dimensional environments.

A materialist society breeding new consumers?

Future celebrities?

A profoundly unselfish act to accelerate maturity and curb narcissism?

Fulfilling preconceived expectations or projecting unfulfilled ones?

To appease or keep a mate?

Utilizing video, tee-shirts, mens ties, and collage, Stephen Anderson’s take on “Father Material” is cynical, judgmental and humorous.

Just watch “Cops” or “Jerry Springer” or the slew of reality TV shows to note that mankind is doomed.

Becoming a father in the literal sense is far too easy, add to it modern fertility drugs and the flood of “erection” pills it’s quite ironic to call it the “miracle” of birth.

With the amount of child abuse and kids put up for adoption, living in foster homes or engaged in slavery it’s crazy that people need a license to drive but anyone with a penis can become a father.

An idealization of one’s father often projected

onto someone to whom one looks for guidance and protection. One who gives. One who gives life, love, sex, money or council.

After you receive one, some or all of these gifts, the “Father Material” has but one question in his mind for you: ”Who’s your Daddy?” You are to be extra thankful because this was from your “Daddy.” Who’s your Daddy?

EICHLER SHOW

Please join us for a special exhibition of drawings by Jeffrey Crussell illustrating the architecture of developer Joseph Eichler and his early 1960s mid-century modern homes built in Orange, California. This exhibit will consist of 50 pencil drawings available as archival pigment prints in small editions and displayed in a 1964 Eichler designed by the architectural firm of Claud Oakland.

Show runs from February 20 to March 20, 2010 and is located in Orange, California

OCHSA Exhibition at OCCCA

The Orange County High School of the Arts- (OCHSA) Visual Arts Conservatory is having its annual Winter Exhibit (grades 9 through 12) at the OCCCA Gallery.

Show Runs: January 6th – 13th, 2010

Opening Reception: Wednesday Jan 6th, 6-10pm

This fantastic exhibit showcases over 100 of the most artistically talented OC teens in the areas of painting, drawing, fashion, graphic design, ceramics, jewelry, printmaking and more. A must see show if you want to see the talented artists of tomorrow!

Cirque du Soleil has generously donated two tickets valued at $85.00 each to OCCCA to rafﬂe off during the opening of the OCHSA (Orange County High School of the Arts) exhibit on January 6th.
